DPS Hear : Take a Closer Look

This example shows a passage of “New York, New York” in greater detail. The original recording is at the top while the Bongiovi DPS processed version is at the bottom:

See how passages that are quieter in the original recording resemble the Bongiovi DPS processed version. As the original recording gets louder, Bongiovi DPS reacts to decrease the level but only does so when the sonic content would be perceived as loud. This is what allows the Bongiovi DPS algorithm to control the audio signal in such a drastic, yet transparent way.

For those who are used to looking at waveforms, you might think the DPS processed version would sound quieter than the original. However, to our human ears, they would be perceived as the same volume.
